Historical Highlights
For my capstone project, I undertook the task of creating a series of ten movie-size posters that captured the history of the United States from the 1900s to the 1990s. Each poster is meticulously themed to evoke the mood and aesthetic of each decade and consists of a total of a hundred carefully curated facts, ten facts per decade. These facts are a blend of significant events, groundbreaking inventions, presidential terms, the creation of noteworthy companies, and other intriguing and important information.
For the visual elements, each poster features a montage of photographs and illustrations, all of which have been crafted using Adobe Illustrator. The process of creating the illustrations varied in complexity, with each one taking between two and six hours to attain the desired level of detail and accuracy.
In addition to the posters, I extended the project by creating 40 trivia cards and producing multiple Instagram posts. The idea for this expansion stemmed from a project I began in my Graphic Design 4 class during the spring of 2021.

The Process
Mood Boards and Research
As I began my project, my focus was on crafting detailed mood boards to capture the unique essence and visual flair of each decade. While most of the mood boards stayed true to their original themes, a handful - like the 30s, 40s, and 60s - took on remarkable transformations as I unearthed more about these eras.
After wrapping up the mood boards, I delved into some serious research that pretty much took over my summer, leading to an in-depth understanding of various aspects across the different decades. In total, I gathered one hundred facts, ten facts about each decade, which I initially recorded in a Word Document file for organization and reference purposes throughout the project. Following this, I transferred the information into ten separate Illustrator files.
Trivia Cards
In spring 2021, I combined my capstone project with the Graphic Design 4 class. During the class, I developed 40 trivia cards focusing on different decades, which played a crucial role in shaping the visual direction of the upcoming posters. The process of creating these cards led me to incorporate a blend of photography and illustrations, aiming to evoke a timeless and engaging aesthetic for my capstone project.
Instagram Posts
Along with creating the trivia cards, I also developed mockups of Instagram posts in addition to the trivia cards for Historical Highlights. These mockups offer a visual representation of how the project could be presented on an Instagram platform. Each post features an illustration or photo, accompanied by a notable historical fact and its corresponding year. The caption of each post is intended to provide a brief explanation of the featured fact.
